Roland Ernest Schneider was born in San Diego, San Diego County, California on February 21, 1884. His father was Arnold Schneider who had been born in Russikon, Zürich, Switzerland and came to San Diego in 1869. He married Elizabeth “Lizette” Stahel in 1874 and they had two children, Fred Arnold Schneider (1875 – 1940) and Ernest Roland Schneider (21 Feb 1884 – 3 May 1934.)
Arnold Schneider owned and operated the A. Schneider Book Store on Fifth and F streets in San Diego until he retired and moved his family back to Switzerland in 1887.
Fred Arnold Schneider returned to San Diego in 1896 and became active in real estate and insurance. He married Evelyn M. Westhaver in 1936.
Ernest Roland Schneider graduated from the University of Zurich with a doctor of laws degree before returning with his mother to San Diego. They departed Europe from Marseille, France and arrived in New York on Jun 22, 1919. The family owned and operated the Hotel Schneider on 615 8th Street.
Dr. Roland Schneider became active in the photographic community of San Diego and may have been a founding member of the Camera Enthusiasts in August 1927.
Dr. Roland E Schneider displayed natural color photographs during the November 1927 meeting. This collection of photographs included 127 pictures, produced by the autochrome process, including cloud studies, sunsets, Spanish houses, scenes in the city parks and at the beaches and a few portrait studies posed in colorful costumes. These images were projected on a large screen.
Roland Schneider did become president of the Camera Enthusiasts. By 1931 he was listed as a member of that organization’s Executive Committee. It should be noted that Miss Florence B. Kimmler was elected club secretary. She was also the Chairman of the Salon Committee for the 1932 Exhibition.
Florence B. Kemmler was born in 1900 and her family moved to San Diego in 1920 where she met Roland Schneider. Together they went on to become award winning amateur photographers with exhibits in galleries around the world. In 1934, they married and had a son, Roland Ernest Schneider (Junior.) That same year Ernest Roland Schneider (Senior) died and Florence Kemmler Schneider stopped taking photographs. She died in 1972.
The San Diego History Center has two collections related to these families:
